2 KCPE candidates drown in Kiambu while on school trip after rehearsals


  • Police in Kiambu county are searching for bodies of KCPE candidates who drowned in Theta Dam while on an excursion
  • The candidates from Comejuu Premier Academy Primary School in Komothai, Githunguri, were on an excursion after their KCPE exams rehearsals on Friday
  • About 60 pupils from Class Eight and Grade Six went for the tour at Kinare forest, and the two were to sit for their exams scheduled for Monday, November 28

A search operation is underway after two class eight candidates drowned in Theta Dam in Kiambu county during a school trip on Friday, November 25.

Bodies recovered

The pupils from Comejuu Premier Academy Primary School in Komothai, Githunguri, were on an excursion after their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination rehearsals.

Headteacher David Paul Kang’ethe said 60 pupils, drawn from class eight and grade six, went for an excursion to Kinare forest, Citizen Digital reported.

The two boys, aged 14, were to write their national exams starting Monday, November 28, 2022.

Officers from Kiganjo police station are working jointly with their counterparts from Mindoro Police Post and detectives from Gatundu in the search operation.

“The operation kicked off after the boys slipped into Theta Dam at around 4:30 pm on Friday,” police said.

The search mission resumed on Saturday, November 26, and the bodies have since been retrieved.

Theta Dam is 17 metres high and reinforced with a concrete spillway stretching to the Mundoro Forest edge.

KCSE candidate drowns in Kirinyaga

The drowning incident comes weeks after a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate died in Kirinyaga County.

It was reported that 17-year-old Grace Wanjiku drowned in a tour of Mt Kenya at Castle in Gichugu Constituency.

Wanjiku died on November 5, 2022, during a school trip in Mt Kenya that was aimed at helping the candidates to cool off ahead of their national exams.

Tears flowed freely as Wanjiku’s classmates said their goodbyes to her just a few weeks before the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.
