Bridgerton actor who dropped out of PhD at Cambridge Uni for comedy

If you are anything like us you are completely obsessed with the new series of Bridgerton! It has everything you could want from dramatic love affairs to moments of comedy.

However, what you might not know is that one of the actors in the first series actually studied as an undergraduate at Cambridge University. He then started a PHD but scrapped it to be a comedian.

Ben Miller plays the character of Lord Featherington, a gambling father of three. His character is complex and interesting, as most of the characters on the hit Netflix TV show are.

Who is Ben Miller?

Ben Miller is a very successful actor and comedian. He started his career touring comedy clubs and became so successful the he got his own TV show, along with fellow Cambridge graduate Alexander Armstrong – the Armstrong and Miller show.

Since then he has starred in lots of TV shows and films such as Jonny English, Death in Paradise, Doctor Who and many others. If you recognise his voice it might be because he was also the PG tips monkey!

Miller studied Natural Sciences at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge. As an undergraduate, he participated in theatre with Rachel Weisz, and also dated her.

He made the decision to stay at Cambridge to study for a PhD in solid state physics but abandoned this idea and decided to take up a career in comedy.

His interest in comedy all started when a friend asked him to help ferry around the judges of the National Student Drama Festival, which was being held that year in Cambridge. He then joined the Footlights ( a Cambridge comedy club) in 1989, and worked with Andy Parsons, David Wolstencroft and Sue Perkins.

He has since gone on to star in the show Professor T, which follows the story of a genius Cambridge University criminologist with OCD. He has been spotted in the city previously filming for the ITV show, including outside Jesus College.

Who is Ben Miller’s character in Bridgerton?

Miller stars in Bridgerton as Lord Featherington, a husband and father of three. He is only in the first season and is father to Prudence, Philippa, and Penelope Featherington. No spoilers but he is married to Lady Featherington and throughout the season they have a turbulent marriage, especially when she discovers his gambling addiction.

Despite this lecherous Lord’s fancy title, London society still rather sees him as a bit of a joke. He may treat his wife with little to no respect, yet he always seems to have a soft spot for his daughters.
