Billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad, one of Michigan State University’s most prominent alumni, died Friday afternoon in Los Angeles. He was 87.

The death was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, the New York Times reported.

Broad and his wife Edythe have been among MSU’s most loyal donors, giving some $100 million to the university over time.

“Eli was a selfless, kindhearted man who dedicated much of his life to making the lives of others better,” MSU President Samuel Stanley Jr. said Friday night in a statement. “Eli embodied what it means to be a Spartan.”

Stanley said the campus community will be “forever grateful” for Broad’s service and generosity to his alma mater, adding that the impact of his contributions “will be felt for decades to come.”
