Four Join U-M Rowing During Fall Signing Period

ANN ARBOR, Mich — The University of Michigan rowing team announced the signing of four student-athletes to national letters of intent on Thursday (Nov. 19).

The signing class includes: Gabbie Graves, Gracie Landefeld, Carla Russell and Katie Easton. These student-athletes will join U-M in the fall of 2021 as freshmen.

“During a challenging year, it brings us great excitement to formally welcome these four student-athletes to our Michigan Rowing family,” said head coach Mark Rothstein. “They are a group of intelligent, motivated, hard-working individuals, and collectively they are a great addition to our program.””

“Gabbie, Gracie, Carla and Katie are going to be important contributors to Michigan Rowing. They represent the core of what will be an exciting freshman class for us filled with excellent students and talented athletes.”

“We have secured commitments from several other future Wolverines to be part of this class as well. Together they will make up a signing class that will make important contributions to our program both on the water and in our campus community.”

Katie Easton

• Attends Methodist Ladies College in Melbourne, Australia
• Academic distinctions in mathematics and geography; school prefect and House Captain
• MLC Sports Achiever and Oars Women award winner
• Currently rows with Melbourne University Boat Club
• Part of Australia’s sixth-place finishing JW4+ at the 2019 Junior World Championships in Tokyo
• Rowed with the first-place 8+ at the Victoria State Championships and Head of the School Girls regatta
• Won gold at the School Girl 8+ National Championships
• Competed with the basketball, cross-country, netball and Australian football teams at MLC
• Also played club and representative basketball
• Daughter of Jonathan and Sharon Easton

• Attends Holy Names Academy in Seattle, Wash.
• Co-Leader of the Girl Power Club at Holy Names her senior year
• Holder of three world records in the 15-16 age category: 1-minute, 100-meters and 500-meters
• American record-holder in the 17-18 age category at 100-meters
• At the Head of the Charles, helped Holy Names place sixth in the junior women’s 8+
• Two-time member of the U.S. Junior World Rowing team
• Placed fourth in the women’s 8+ (2019) and won a silver medal in the same event (2018) at the World Junior Rowing Championships
• American runner-up and fourth-place global finisher at the 2019 World Indoor Rowing Championships in junior women’s 2k category
• Daughter of Heidi Tosterud and Stephen Graves/p>

Gracie Landefeld

Gracie Landefeld

• Attends Wheeler Magnet Center for Advanced STEM Studies in Marietta, Ga.
• USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll
• Georgia Certificate of Merit recipient
• Four-year principal’s honor roll member; three years of Spanish national honor society
• Currently rows with and captains the Atlanta Junior Rowing Association (AJRA) varsity women
• Won gold at the USRowing Nationals U19 event as a member of the U.S. High Performance Camp (USHP) U17 8+
• Also won a bronze medal in the 4+ with the USHP U17 4+
• Part of a gold medal-winning 4+/4x and a fourth-place winning U19 2-/2x at the U.S. Virtual National Championships
• Five-time gold medalist at Atlanta Erg Sprints and two-time record-setter at the U17 level
• Also owns two top-20 finishes at Head of the Charles in the women’s youth 8+
• Daughter of Jeff and Mandy Landefeld

Carla Russell

Carla Russell

• Attends Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School in Marlow, England
• Leader of Debate Society and member of Politics Society
• History Scholar Award recipient
• Rows with Leander Club; began with Henley Rowing Club (HRC)
• Rowed with the Great Britain U19 team in winter 2019 training camp located in Spain
• Set three national records rowing with HRC
• Three-time Henley women’s winner (2017-19)
• In the same span, won four national titles and five British Championships
• Two-time silver medalist at British Nationals
• Also earned half-colours in 2018-19 as part of the soccer team
• Daughter of Kate and Jack Russell
