RUG7: UBC star pushes T-Birds to impressive opening tournament
CALGARY – British Columbia’s Shoshanah Seumanutafa was named the Canada West Rugby 7s Player of the Week by the conference on Tuesday.
Seumanutafa was tremendous over the weekend, leading her UBC Thunderbirds to victory in the first sevens competition of the season. She helped the T-Birds to a perfect 3-0 record after the first day in Edmonton, setting her team up for a semifinal match with the defending CW champions in the Victoria Vikes.
The Vikes have won the title for four straight years, but Seumanutafa had no time for a history lesson. She drew first blood with a try and a convert, before going on to kick two more converts in the 26-7 win.
The fifth-year from White Rock, BC duplicated that output in the finals to propel her team to victory. The reigning CW Rugby 15s Player of the Year also showed her grit on defence, shining throughout the tournament.
Seumanutafa and the T-Birds are now readying for the second tournament of the year in Victoria on February 11 and 12. They’ll conclude the three-tournament season at home on March 4 and 5, where they hope to earn their first-year CW Rugby 7s crown.
